How to Help when You’re Drowning Yourself.

How to Help when You’re Drowning Yourself.

I heard it in your voice as you dove into virtually teaching third graders. You were so perky and upbeat, but there was so much stress underlying your tone when bandwidth was dragging, everyone needed help, and things kept glitching.   You became a teacher to instruct tiny humans in math or reading. Yet here you are, teaching adults how to navigate technology you have only just learned yourself.   I see your post, working parents. The cries for help and ideas, looking everywhere for a release valve in the wake of bottomless expectations and no good options.   I’ve...

When it’s Time to Fly the Big Dreams

When it’s Time to Fly the Big Dreams

Recently, I signed up for a study of Bob Goff's new book, "Dream Big".  In the videos, he is surrounded by the most amazing, colorful display of paper airplanes.  He shares a story about a class he teaches in a local prison.  He invites them make a paper airplane any way they want, then line up to throw them and see how far they can make theirs fly.  Inevitably, the more elaborate ones look great, but don't actually fly far at all.  It's the simple ones, that have less folds, less creases that actually are able to soar.  He jokes...

Last night we walked down to the river after supper. We don’t live near just any river.  A quick 10 minute drive, and we are looking at class IV rapids that draw kayakers and adventure athletes from around the world to play and compete. There are underground bunkers somewhere and computer nerds are generating bots to churn out misleading drama....it can go dark if you let it... No matter the motivation, I’m so tired of feeling like the only way to know what is real is by trying to become an expert on all the things. I think we either tend to shut down because it’s overwhelming, or we become obsessed.   One side effect I have...

“Keep Smiling” ~Captain Douglas DiCenzo.

“Keep Smiling” ~Captain Douglas DiCenzo.

“Amanda. He didn’t make it”.   One sentence.   One phone call.   Nothing is the same again after. Ever.   There are very few moments in life when the whole world seems to both stop and spin out of control. My Nic. Broken in a million pieces an ocean away.  Neither of us have a clue what was said after that. Does it even matter?  Words can’t help.   I just kept crying “Jesus Jesus we need you so desperately.”   War is so painful. Doug loved America. He was a smart, West Point grad. He was a methodical...
